Decorating Dilemma Party

I am joining the Decorating Dilemma Party over at Serenity Now...doesn't that sound like fun?
Decorating Dilemmas

Okay, my decorating dilemma is this big bad boy.  I love it to death.  It is from Pier 1 and was given to Seth and I right after we got married.  Now, it sits in my living room and stores Calebs toys and diapers...I love the functionality of it, but I don't love the big black darkness of it.  It has been painted a few times, moved from state to state, stored in a warehouse for 6 months...and is still alive.  The good news is that I took this picture yesterday morning and it is currently in transition.  I am still confused as to what the final product will be though.  Any of your ideas are welcome!

depends on the rest of the decor/colors in that room. I could see it in a creamy white, or a pretty light/sea blue, or a deep red.
Personally, I like the dark wood. we have lots of dark wood, with colorful and light accents. it works well in the typical military housing - white, cream, or tan walls.

I like the idea of painting it a bold accent color and making it a focal point of the room.

A creamy white would be gorgeous especially if you did a darker glaze on it! Good luck!

Hi! Stopping by from the Decorating Dilemma Party. It is hard to say without knowing the other colors in the room...I would say sand it, prime it, and painting it a color that goes with your decor. Then, it would be fun to add cute new knobs!

Painting it a lighter color might be the change that you need. If you don't like it, you could always change it back to dark!

I think you should paint it a medium to light color and add decals or wall paper to the doors =) Good luck with it, whatever you do!

Love the cupboard, and I'm all for painting it, but I'd go for a neutral - like a creamy white (distressed a little) or a soft soft dove grey. That way it can go in any room in the future. I love to wipe on a wax finish (Briwax) to antique it a little, and then buff it to a hard protective finish.

I was going to post my suggestion, but I'm going to say ditto to Claudine instead. It's exactly what I was going to say. Thanks for stopping by my dilemma.

I'm not sure what colors you are going for, but a great way to break up a lot of the color would be to mod podge some paper into the panels of the doors. That would also add some extra color or lighten up the piece without making the whole thing one color.

If you're tired of the dark, I ditto the others who mentioned a distressed white. Aqua also seems to be the color of choice these days, and it's fun. If you know you just don't have the time to do that, maybe some new "crystal" knobs will dress it up!

Thank you so much for linking up to my party! I hope you have a fun time visiting around. :)

I'd paint it too! Probably something like antique white with a smokey glaze (like everything I like is painted! ha). I'd apply some beadboard wallpaper to the inner panels on the outside of each door and paint over it with the antique white. The beadboard wallpaper is textured to look like real beadboard without the thickness. You can paint right over it and still have that great ridged texture. Whatever you do with it, it's a beautiful piece!

Everyone else has given you great ideas! I like the idea of painting it a bright color, but I know that will take a lot of effort. What about mod-podging (or wallpapering) the raised panel with a bright, fun paper that coordinates with the rest of the room's decor?

Are you wanting to break rank? Are you exhausted with military spouse support groups that have forgotten how to actually support the unique needs of a woman or a man who is married to the military. Are you just as passionate about art, music, your children, your career, as your are about your spouses military status. I think it would be so pretty as a chippy white with a little of the original color peeking through. Or I love the color of that lantern on top -- seaside blue. That would be so pretty too!

Would yellow or red fit with the rest of your colors? That might give it some new life.

paint it a color to match the rest of the room and distress it if it goes with your decor. I love it!
